After 14 months of diligent work and training as an Associate Strategic Planner, I was promoted to Strategic Planner. Of course with the promotion came more responsibility and was therefore placed to work on our Goodyear client with our retail practice, FCB RED.
Here I learned and worked within the world of retail/shopper marketing and how that dimension of a brands business can ultimately shape the overall company. Working in retail marketing posed an interesting set of challenges seeing that the retail setting caters to a very specific behavior: making a purchase. Working for this business unit taught me to appreciate for advertising, marketing, and business as a whole.
Associate Strategic Planner
My first "real job" out of college was as an Associate Strategic Planner at FCB Chicago. I consider this role as my training ground for everything planning and advertising. As a planner on several different brands I was able to get first hand experience conducting qualitative & quantitative market research and developing key insights that our creatives used as direction with the intent of building our clients brands.
Some of the brands I've done work for include State Farm, Samsung, Michelob Ultra, Good Year, and The Chicago Public Library. I've also had the opportunity to serve as support and lead strategic planner on New Business pitches.
MINORITY ADVERTISING INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (MAIP)
As a MAIP fellow I was required to complete a rigorous training program that prepared me for employment in the advertising industry. This training included a weekly seminar that covers various topics from "The Art of Story Telling" to "Race in the Work Place". Other facets of this training included portfolio building and matching with a mentor that helped build my professional skillset.
Account Management Intern
As a part of the account management team for Energy BBDO's Ziploc business my day to day tasks varied. I would do anything from provide high-level competitive analyses for senior account team members to helping polish final creative assets to be pushed for a new campaign.
All in all this experience sharpened my communication skills and lay a strong foundation for my project management skills. With a team that spanned the entire globe I learned the fundamentals of clear communication and effective project management.
